At JohMotors we want you to get the most out of your riding experience. Here are a few tips about getting the most from your biking. Limassol, like most towns, is very busy with numerous junctions, good and bad surfaces. Not to mention good and bad drivers. You should ride well within your own limitations.
Road surface
The road surface, combined with tyre quality, speed and weather, dictates how you should ride. Only somewhere like a race track will you find consistentcy in the surface. You should watch for POTHOLES, MANHOLE COVERS, GRAVEL and places where parts of the road surface have worn smooth. This type of road surface is lethal if it rains!
Tyres and bike condition
Make sure you have the correct tyres for your bike. Never fit oversized tyres 'because it looks good'. Make sure the tyres on your bike are in good condition and have sufficient tread. And lastly, NEVER FIT RACE TYRES TO A ROAD BIKE. They offer grip only when up to operating temperature. Keep your bike serviced and check it before you ride it. Bring your bike to us if you are unsure.
Gloves
The first thing you'll do in a crash is put you hands out to break the fall. Skin tarmac at even 30kph????? Gloves offer good protection, and for about £50 you can buy quality gloves with knuckle and improved palm protection.
Helmet
The single most important piece of protective gear you can have. How much do you value your head? Run head-first into a wall without a helmet on! Thats stupid isn't it? Many riders are seriously injured or killed because they do not wear a helmet.
The helmet should fit tightly and should not be able to be pulled off. It should have been made to a high standard. Buy a recognised type like an Arai. And lastly, your helmet should be fastened securely. If not, in the event of an accident it will come off!
Leather jackets/trousers/leathers
Yes it is hot here in Cyprus and the temptation is to ride in a shirt, shorts and sandals or trainers. We recommend however that you have a good quality jacket at least, preferably with armour to protect you in the event you come off.
Tarmac, not surprisingly, is very hard and abrasive. Good quality clothing and/or a leather suit will protect your skin and good quality armour absorbs the impact energy possible reducing the potential for breaking bones.
Boots
Good quality boots can help reduce 'crush effect' in an accident. Most good types have a metal plate in the sole that resists crushing, and many have shin and ankle protection.
JohnMotors want you get the most from your motorcycling. Be safe. If you need any help or advice, come and see us. We are on Omonia Avenue in Limassol, on the Port road about 2km from the Orpahanides roundabout.
Save racing for the track
A fast bike, sticky tyres, a set of gloves and a helmet do not turn you into a world champion racer! It takes years of practice, a few visits to the hospital and some broken bones! Unlike the road, racing is done in a controlled environment. Save racing for the track.
